Ice Formations

I shot these photo's in late March early in the morning at Happy Hollow Park. As you can see it was a cold morning. I remember my fingers being numb even from the short exposure to the air. I was wearing some thick wool mittens that the finger part folded back to allow you to use your fingers.

Here is a final photo to warm you back up. It is not a great shot but the red glow of the early morning sun looks nice.

Another foggy morning

This last Saturday I hiked to Happy Hallow Park. Happy Hallow Park is in West Lafayette. I live in (east) Lafayette. It is about 5 miles from my house. A storm passed through the evening before and rained hard for a short while. But it was not that bad here.

As I was walking to the park and getting near it I began to notice there were a lot of leaves on the ground. At first I thought some maybe someone had been trimming the trees. About a quarter block for the Indian Trails entrance to the park I notice a pile of ice. I though someone dumped a cooler of ice. Then I get to the enterence and see this. Piles of hail stones from last nights storm. They were everywhere inside the park.

Then as I started down the trail I saw this scene. I pulled out my tripod and went to work. The shots did not come out great but I still like them.

All along the side of the trail there were patches of 1-2 inches deep hail stone piles. This was at least 12 hours after the storm. As you can see the path is covered with leaves knocked down from the trees.

The post not about Icebergs

On my Saturday hike (8 miles) I photographed a large quantity of ice chunks scattered along the trail left over from the freezing of the river. I was going to call this post "Iceburgs along the Wabash". Or something clever like that.

But I encountered two problems. One was that most of the hike was along a tributary of the Wabash river called Burnett's Creek. The other problem was that almost all of the photo's came out CRAPPY! It was an overcast gloomy day, I was very gloomy and the pictures were very boring.

I did manage to take a few pictures that are moderately suitable for publishing. My favorite one is the water drops hitting the water. But that was a heavily cropped photo, so it is blurrier than I would have preferred.

I really wish this winter would end. It has greatly effected my mood this year. Life is kinda sucking right now and this long, cold snowy winter is not helping. It will be 60 degrees today and tommorrow. Then 5-8 inches of snow are being predicted this Wednesday.

Ice

I took a walk to Happy Hollow Park this Saturday to take pictures of the frozen waterfall that I visited last week. I brought a better lens this time. I was not happy with any of the photo's I took there. By the time I arrived the sky had clouded up and my tripod was too short to get the angles I wanted.

As I was walking to the park I passed by the library where I work. There were many very nice icicles hanging from the roof, and the sun was shinning and in a good spot. So I stopped to take a few pictures.

The destination was a bust but the journey was fruitful.

First Day hike

I took my first "First Day Hike" at Turkey Run State Park this year. I had heard about it from their Facebook page about a week or two before. The link above is about the hike I went on. I am even in one or two of the pictures. Though it is hard to see me.

I hiked with the group for an hour or two then when it was over I hiked by myself for a few more hours. It was chilly at the beginning but it warmed up nicely later in the day. I did not stay as late as I would have liked too have because a snow storm was predicted to start in the afternoon or evening.

Lafayette did get about 3-4 inches of snow. Then a few days later we receive a lot more snow and an Arctic blast passed through. The wind chill dropped to -40 on Monday.
